Like what we discussed in class and Architecture Form Space and Order, the four prime generators of form are point, line, plane, and volume. Dots turn into lines, lines turn into planes, and planes create volumes; the progression of these elements turns from 1D all the way to 3D. These elements are used to help describe interior design and architecture. Many different examples are shown in the book, but one that we also talked about in class and was in the book is horizontal planes in Falling Waters by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Drawing, especially sketching, is an important way to express one’s ideas. As an artist, you should always have a sketchbook and pencil on hand no matter where you go. Four basic, yet critical drawing skills talked about in the Sketching Interiors book are: perception of edges, perception of spaces, perception of light and shadow, and how to perceive spatial relationships. Some other useful tools to bring while sketching are sketch papers, colored pencils, an eraser, a kneaded eraser, a pencil sharpener, ink pens / sharpies, markers, and marker papers. And always remember to relax your wrist when drawing.

When drawing we need to switch from using the left side of our brain to the right side, which is better for visualization, creativity, music, and graphic art.

Free hand drawing presents a unique individual style and process of creative thinking, but when one adds digital design, it can present the drawings more realistically and give the drawings a more polished look.`

  1. I love how you included pictures from your slides to show us these elements that we learned about. It was great to see your ideas and visualization of these elements. I also really appreciate your postings of things that we learned in not only class but from both textbooks as well.

  2. You did a good job of summarizing the main points that we learned. I really liked how you noted how each of the elements go into each other, like how points go into lines, and lines go into planes, etc.

  3. I appreciate how you simplified the reading in an easy to understand way. You found some points that i did not catch such as relaxing your hand while drawing is important. Also the room you picked to draw upside down is super cute :) and you did a very good job
